Bank holidays

For the amount of grief banks actually give you over the years - too right we deserve a few days off work to make up for it! Pity I'm still a temp so I don't get paid - but v. excited about have 3 days off in a row this weekend, has been a good while.

Let me back track a few days to Tuesday night when I went to my THIRD UK movie premiere, absolute bollocks of a movie - You, Me & Dupree, but Pointi and I did get to walk the red carpet just in front of Michael Douglas. Once again skipped out on the after party being too darn tired.

Battle plan for the long weekend:

Attack Oxford St tonight in search of jeans, mine have literally fallen apart. Then on to Kat's for drinks with the old Archway house girls - can't wait!

Tomorrow have nothing planned but looking forward to a visit from James and on Sunday we are heading to....LEGOLAND!!!! Hmm do you think I'm excited? Two reasons, 1) I'm dying to see this magical wonderland and 2) I get to go to Windsor and get out of London for the first time in 4 months. Need fresh air!!!

Monday may head to Notting Hill carnival earlier in the day and then I'm moving out of Wilton Square *sob* and I'll be living with Pointi until I find somewhere! Hopefully soon.

Take care everyone and don't get too jealous that we have a long weekend and you don't!

Hazy shade of winter

Summer is rapidly departing the fair shores of London and the High Street Road stores suddenly have an amazing stock of winter fashion on display... Yes I'm sad to see the sun go but my goodness I'm getting excited about the clothes I'll get to wear! Jackets, long boots, funky tights, scarves, glam punk winter tunics, gloves, hats...

Having left Melbourne at the end of summer, hitting Turkey for the start of their summer and enduring the steamy hot London summer - it has been a rare thing for me to wear a jumper or jacket for the past 4.5 months.

If you ignored the temperature change, here are some sure fire signs that would tell you winter is on the way;

- It is getting darker earlier - instead of being almost daylight until 10pm it is getting dark around 8.30.
- As I stated above the autumn/ winter fashion range is out in full force!
- I'm starting to want to sleep in rather than being bright eyed and bushey tailed at 5.30am!!!
- In the past week I've had soup for lunch 3 times!
- Yesterday I had my first Sunday roast since March
- I miss having Keiser around to cuddle (lucky James doesn't mind filling in!)

The weather isn't exactly cold - in fact we haven't been below 21-22 since the hot weather died off a few weeks ago, but you just it's not terribly far away.

Update since my last post...

Last Friday I made my first trip to Fabric and saw my beloved High Contrast!!!! We lined up for yonks to get in but I must say I was very impressed with the security, cashier and cloak room process whilst we endured the wait. Fabric is a phenomenal set up - but due to the incredible line up it was so packed and almost hard to enjoy yourself. Room 2 where High Contrast played was rammed to the rafters and all I wanted to do was dance my little heart out - but was constantly being slammed by people or elbowed in the head (joys of being 5'2"). But I still walked away happy knowing that I'd fulfilled one of my dreams.

The next day the heads weren't sore so James and I went to Notting Hill to check out the tail end of Portabello Market and some second hand music shops (and a few bars along the way!!!). On the way we (accidentally) went into the Oxfam bookshop and walked out with another 3 gems! One of them being 'Bare' George Michael's biog - half way through and it's brilliant!! Hats off to all who donate their books to Oxfam, they seriously stock the best of the best of all the 2nd hand book stores. That night met Lauren for a lovely Thai dinner and bevvies at one of our new favourites - The New Rose in Angel.

Sunday devoured the 2nd hand music shops in Islington and had a wonderful Turkish pide at Mem & Laz!

Top weekend really.

Other news

Well after much consideration I've decided to leave the Wilton Hilton due to the rent increase and my friend Chris and I are currently looking for a 2 bedroom place around the Highbury area. It is still leafy and green and beautiful like Islington but a little more affordable. And most importantly - I'll still be close to friends, in fact closer! I'm looking at a place on Blackstock Rd tonight which is the same road Kat, Cheyne, Dean, Jaden live on and soon Pointi will too!

My grandpa John is off life support - it's such wonderful news as it was not looking great for a while. Onwards and upwards! Still send my thoughts and wishes home every day.

That's about all for now - hope everyone is doing well at home and saving your pennies to come visit me.

It's a shambles

Received a phone call on Wednesday night - an invitation to a Babyshambles rehearsal that night, just around the corner from my flat. And I said no... It was Wednesday, I was tired.

I'm actually regretting not going now but I've put it out to the universe that I will be up for something like this in the future - just not on a school night, or when I'm tired. So let's just wait to see what happens.

It's 3.05pm on Friday, the day is dragging like you wouldn't believe. Probably because I've been awake since 5.45am with butterflies in my stomach about seeing High Contrast at Fabric tonight! It's taken me 29 years, 5 months and 11 days but by george I'm living out one of my more significant dreams 'in the nightahhhhh' to quote Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother for the non-fans...).

Have a lovely weekend all - will report in on Monday with the tales of my polyester evening xxx

Terrorists, EMO, Fabric & my little toe

***

No doubt you’ve all heard:

‘A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted’

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Police are searching premises after 21 people were arrested. Home Secretary John Reid said they believed the "main players" were accounted for.

High security is causing delays at all UK airports.

The threat level to the UK has been raised by MI5 to critical after the arrests in London, High Wycombe and Birmingham.

Critical threat level - the highest - means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK".

Three US airlines are believed to have been targeted.

Total: 21 people arrested
London: 'Majority' of arrests - exact locations not known
Birmingham: Two arrests
High Wycombe: At least one arrest

– bbb.co.uk 10/08/06

Our friends Kat and Cheyne were due to leave for France today, along with Cheyne’s mum. I spoke to Kat briefly before she arrived at Stansted Airport this morning, we are yet to receive any further updates from them.

Terrorists – bugger off, seriously. No one likes you and I’ll be extremely cut if you prevent my beautiful friends from getting away on their much deserved holiday.

Soho Square was swarming with EMO juvenile crusties this morning – why I’m not exactly sure, maybe Slipknot are in town.

Without a doubt the most gender-confused breed of all music devotees. What cracks me up is they have this deluded idea that they are viewed as ‘misunderstood’ when really we understand them perfectly. Snotty little rich kids with too much money to spend on make up and hair salons (the boys more so than the girls surprisingly) with ear problems as they truly believe they are listening to good music…

The below really speaks for itself, the line up for my inaugural trip Fabric this Friday…

Room One:
Adam Freeland
Plump DJs
Stanton Warriors
Krafty Kuts
Ali B

Room Two:
Andy C
High Contrast
Grooverider
DJ Fresh
Peshay
Marly Marl
MCs:
Dynamite MC
Moose & 2 Shy

Room Three:
DJ Vadim
Joe Ransom

Medical report: closed my little foot in the darn door this morning – I couldn’t even swear I was in that much pain. I had to wear my flip flops to work as no shoe would sit well over this throbbing mess.

If I can’t wear my new designer £7 boots to Fabric tomorrow night I will be extremely upset, and I'm pretty sure High Contrast will be too.

Hello

Just wondering if Dan Murphy’s stock Magners cider in Australia – Melbourne in particular?

I have discovered it in the UK and will be shattered if it’s not available back home!

Reader's block

Have you ever had it? Does it actually exist? If it does I think I have it and it's so annoying.

I've got 3 books on the go at the moment plus a few other newies on the shelf;
  • John Peel's autobiography
  • On Beauty - Zadie Smith
  • History Boys play script - Alan Bennett

All fantastic however I read a page and my mind wanders and I end up reading the same page over and over and I'm getting nowhere very fast.

Pointi suggested I may have too many books and that could be the problem. Maybe I'll tuck some away out of view when I get home tonight.

In music news - I finally got myself an el-cheapo mini stereo today so I can play all my 2nd hand CDs, maybe that will help my reading along. Life without my iPod is not getting any easier.

To all the mexican-fiesta attendees back in Oz I hope your heads have recovered! Looked like you were all having a great time (had a squiz at Sav's photobucket)!!! And special birthday wishes to Ren MBug xxx Where was Curty? Was he away? Usually he's in every shot!

For the fans: just in case you missed my mug popping up on inthemix or fasterlouder xx

Another weekend gone

Why do the hours between 6pm on a Friday and 9.30am on a Monday fly by so quickly? One of those questions that will never be satisfactorily answered – rhetorical if you will.

Friday night Pointi and I did the rounds of the accessories areas of Top Shop and H&M. To all the chickadees back home, you would possibly girly-squeal with excitement at both of these shops – they kick Sportsgirl and similar to the curb.

Saturday had a beautifully lazy day. Woke up at the ridiculous time of 6.30am but it was such a magnificent morning I didn’t want to waste it. Went for a little walk and then met up with Pointi for a champagne breakfast at The Baring. The booze was unintentional – it was offered to us for free, so it would have been rude to refuse.

After breakfast we wandered up to Essex Road where Pointi collected a box from her Mum full of clothes. It was like Christmas morning, except the sleazy post office worker was nothing like Santa. Saturday afternoon was spent at The New Rose; laughs, drama over yonder, great conversation and Dr Magners.

Saturday night was our friend Jade’s 30th – she wanted to see all of her friends (well the girls at least) in dresses so I had my favourite shipped over from Oz for the occasion. Have you ever gone somewhere and felt like the most overdressed person??? Yeah, well now I can claim that I have too… Half the girls weren’t even wearing dresses and most of the boys were all in their usual slop. Oh well, at least my London friends have actually seen me looking like a ‘real’ girl for once pffffft. Finished the night dancing to Layo and Bushwacka playing their monthly all night set at The End – absolutely thumping set. Terrific stuff.

Yesterday was stolen from us by the sleeping fairies – didn’t wake up until 3pm, how ridiculous is that?? Such lovely plans all went to waste, still managed a great afternoon/ evening though – slightly delirious from oversleeping but a healthy dose of good tuneage a couple of lazy Magners took the sting out.

Sorry this has been a pretty boring post… Hopefully something random or hilarious will happen to me this week that I can report.

xx

PS – Can everyone please swing some positive thoughts my Grandpa John’s way? He is really not well and I so wish I could be back home to visit him and be with my family right now.

Welcome to Wilton Square, this is where I live. It's where stranger than strange things happen and where I started making my mark within the first week and won' t leave until I'm made mayor (of the square).

You wouldn't believe the goodness I capture from spying out the window.

Just a few nights ago I caught the late-night-leaf-cruncher, turns out he's a guy not much older than me wearing a suit - he was having a wow of a time.

This is what I see out directly out of my bedroom windows...

Looking to the left of my bedroom window...

Looking to the right from my bedroom window

Oh look it's me Pointi hanging out my other bedroom window!

Hi Pointi!!!!

There's a bear in there...

I can liken the week I've had so far to something you would find behind the 'square window' on Play School.

Monday

Longish day at work, no major events worth writing home about. As I left work my boss, Ian, mentioned that the next two days were going to be f*in hell. He and the Marketing Director, Kieran, were off to LA on Thursday and we had a mammoth release strategy presentation (arrrrrggghhh I hate powerpoint...) to prepare for The History Boys - a British movie based on the play of the same name, starring the original cast of the play, which is currently on Broadway. I reminded him I'm a little aussie battler and to not worry as I was there to help and I'd be in early the next day to get started.

Tuesday

Awoke at 6.30am and stumbled down to the shower to prepare for the early start. As I came down my flat mate's girlfriend, Hannah, came out of the bathroom and told me there was no water... Went down to the kitchen to check the taps - nothing... But it did sound really windy so I looked outside and found our tiny front courtyard (which sits below street level) was about 20cm deep in water!!! Opened the laundry door and it was teaming in through the wall there too.

We woke up the entire house and I had the duty of pushing the leaves off the drain to try and get rid of some of the water, Craig is on the phone to the real estate 'emergency' number, then both boys end up in the water trying to figure out what's wrong. The mains had burst under the sidewalk (which is next to our courtyard) and there was nothing we could do about it!

Due to the busy day I had to prepare for, I found half of a 1 litre water bottle in my room which I had to use to brush my teeth and 'shower'. Somehow managed to get to work on time leaving my poor housemates to take it in shifts staying home all day until the pipe was repaired at 5.30pm.

Had a ballbreaking day trying to deal with powerpoint and didn't leave work until 9pm - you can imagine how hideous I felt without showering.

Wednesday

Made it into work early again, clean and refreshed this time, I can't really describe this day except I worked extremely hard for many hours and ended up getting sent home in a luxury car at 10pm. I vaguely remember walking up the stairs and falling in to bed - and fell asleep mid text message (sorry dude with the hat!). Darned proud of what I helped work on though. For someone that has never really used powerpoint before - putting together a 65 page presentation plus an appendix of 17 pages - it really is something to be proud of. With a Managing Director and Marketing Director looking over your shoulder all day and changing their mind about 50,000,039 times...

Thursday...so far...

I described the bus to work this morning as a veritable circus.

There was a guy with two screaming kids asking where their Mummy was - the guy said she's gone mad and has gone away for a while.

There was a try-hard model type trying to sweet talk this wicked rasta London Transport guy out of a ticket for not having a valid Oyster card (pre-paid travel card) - he took great pleasure in asking her to stop batting her fake eyelashes and take the ticket.

There was also the horseiest looking girl I'd ever seen with the largest plum in her mouth - talking to Mother really loudly on her mobile handsfree (so she looked like she was putting on a stage show if you couldn't see the ear that had the headphone in it), whining and carrying on about how terrible this or that was and what a tragedy that some event had been cancelled. And that she hoped from a previous event held in her honour that some of her friends would be decent enough to have extra prints made of photos taken - and forward them to her... As if you'd want a reminder of how much you look like Mr Ed!

If I hadn't been so tired after the rest of the week - I may have laughed at loud, instead all I could do was look at them all in amazement.

*****after writing this I went to a screening of The History Boys, after working so hard on the presentation I was dying to see it*****

There are some films you can watch and enjoy and not give a second thought to. And then there are some that will move you so much you know you will be pondering them for a long time to come. The History Boys, for me, is definitely the latter.

To set the scene, I'm extremely tired today and it is a very overcast outside - definitely the coolest day we've had in a long time. After a busy start to the morning it slowed off long enough for me to start today's blog entry which always results in me feeling somewhat reflective.

Headed off to the theatre downstairs and settled back in one of the plush leather seats with my bottle of Evian. Two hours later I emerged having laughed, shed a few tears and been incredibly touched by the story that had just unveiled before me. The dialogue (which if you see the play, read the script or watch the film will know really is a horrible 'word'!) is incredibly clever and I just wish my memory bank could have stored and catalogued the brilliance in a little accessible filing cabinet in my brain - ready to bust out at any given time.

The first thing I am doing after work is going to Foyles and purchasing a copy of the play script which is currently available in paperback. In conjunction with the film release they are going to launch a book of the film script complete with Alan Bennett's (the writer) notes. Can't wait to get that either - hoping a copy might swing my way at work.

The performances in the film are incredibly unique and theatrical, you grow to love each and every one of the characters. It is not a pretty film, the subject matters would be shunned or laughed at by many - but I truly loved it and cannot wait to see the play when it comes back to London.

The time is now 3.47pm and I suppose I should do some work...

Until next time xx
